Irene J. Syzdek

Irene J. Syzdek, 85, entered the kingdom of our Lord on April 7, 2013.

Irene was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 22, 1927 to Anthony and Josephine Bojceska Potopowicz. She moved to Amsterdam upon marriage to her husband of 66 years, Myron "Doc" Syzdek.

Irene was educated in New York City public schools and attended Hunter College. She worked for the NYC Public Library before moving to Amsterdam.

Irene was a devoted mother and housewife and, in her later years, returned to work locally for Fownes and the Noteworthy Company. Irene loved her family, animals of all kinds, but most of all, she loved playing Bingo and taking trips to area casinos to play slot machines.

She was a parishioner of the former Roman Catholic Church of St. John The Baptist.

Irene is survived by her husband Myron "Doc" Syzdek, whom she married on August 24, 1945. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Nazaryk of Staten Island, daughter Janice (Robert) Marcucio of Virginia Beach, and son Stephen (Suzanne) Syzdek of Perth, and daughter in law Karen Syzdek of East Greenbush. She also survived by her grandchildren Sean Marcucio of Albany, Jamie (Neal) Wilson of Virginia Beach, Christopher (Melissa) Syzdek of Waterford, Brian Syzdek of Las Vegas, and Andrew and Matthew Syzdek of Perth. Irene was fortunate enough to be blessed with five great grandchildren, Giavonna, Arianna, Brayden, Mia and Taylor. Irene is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Irene was predeceased by her son Michael and infant daughter Mary. She was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

A prayer service will take place Thursday at 11:00 am at the Betz Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. Fr. O. Robert DeMartinis officiating.

Interment will follow in the family plot in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Community Hospice of Amsterdam in care of the funeral home office.
