Nine volunteers from across the country were decked in painting gear Saturday to help the Walter Elwood Museum in their relocation process.

The volunteers hail from states like Washington and Maine, and are part of an AmeriCorps program called the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).

Ian Slingsby, one of the nine, said Saturday that the team is volunteering in the Schohaire area for nine weeks, helping to rebuild the community's homes from the ground up.

As part of their NCCC program, Slingsby said the volunteers are also asked to do 80 individual hours of community service outside of their main project.

And on Saturday, they spent a handful of those hours painting walls in the Walter Elwood Museum's new facility and helping where needed.

Ann Peconie, director of the museum, said one of the AmeriCorps volunteers had been calling the local fire departments, seeing if they needed help with any projects.

When the departments said no, they pointed the volunteers to the museum, as they had also suffered in the flood.

"I was like, 'Oh my gosh yea, you could do a ton of stuff,'" Peconie said when she found out.

She said that it was wonderful to hear that the group was working on houses devastated by Irene in 2011.

"It just amazes me. I mean, I thought we were behind, but we're way far. We have a new site."

Peconie said the group will likely come for another - if not two - Saturdays.
