Catherine Filanova Sinicropi Galluccio

Catherine Filanova Sinicropi Galluccio, Amsterdam, NY, passed away late Wednesday at the home of her daughter with her family by her side. She was two hours shy of her 99th birthday and passed after a brief illness.

Born in Washington, DC on March 13, 1915, the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Francesca Galati Filanova, she moved to Varapodio, Reggio Calabria Italy with her family as an infant and was educated there. Following her marriage to Carmelo Sinicropi and the birth of her first daughter Mary, they moved to New York City in 1937. In 1939, after the birth of her son Carmen, the family moved to Amsterdam.

Catherine was a sewing machine operator for Stanely Sportswear and later for Breirs of Amsterdam before she retired in 1980. She and Carmelo enjoyed traveling and spending winters at their Florida home. Sadly, Carmelo passed away in 1984. On Oct. 4, 1992, she married Frank Galluccio and they lived six months equally in Amsterdam and Australia. As she traveled extensively , her warm and friendly nature ensured her many friends here in the US and abroad. Frank passed away in 2007.

Catherine was a devout Roman Catholic with a special devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. She assisted with her village in Italy's yearly feast in their patron's honor. She was a parishioner of St. Michael's R.C. Church and was a member of the St. Anthony's Auxiliary, the St. Michael's Auxiliary, and now Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Catherine was given the honor of "prayer warrior" by her family, who could always count on her to pray on their behalf.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking, spending time with family at Cape Ann and Myrtle Beach, weekly family poker games, the Hi-Lo Seniors and even recently, the Day Care program at Wilkinson. "What a wonderful legacy Catherine left behind, so much love for her family. She has influenced all of us in many different ways, and her memory will live forever".

She leaves her children; Mary (Luigi) Jobin, Carmen (Rosalind) Sinicropi, Joseph (Patricia) Sinicropi, Frances Phillips all of Amsterdam; Vincent (Lorraine) Sinicropi of Columbus, Ohio, and Elizabeth (Pat) Sinicropi of Middleton, Mass.; grandchildren; David Jobin, Carol Mellon, Richard Jobin, Michele Downing, Carmen Sinicropi, Michael Sinicropi, Beth Bowman, Lois Sinicropi, Catherine Sinicropi Merendo, Linda Palmieri, Joseph Sinicropi, Rebecca Gregory, James Jay Phillips, Sarah Sinicropi Edmon and the late Catherine Neuberger; 28 great grandchildren and five great- great grandchildren. Also, brothers Carmine (Frances) Filanova, Vincent (Herma) Siciliano, nieces, nephews and cousins. Also her dear family in Australia; step children Frances (Joseph) Russo, Carmel (Joseph) Piccolo, Mary (Philip) Gallucci and Joseph (Carmel) Galluccio as well as their families.

She was predeceased by sisters, Carmela Sinicropi, Vincenza Votano, Maria Macri and Lucia Muscara.

Services are Monday at 10:00 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, followed by the con-celebrated Mass at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Fr. Lawrence J. Decker and Fr. Victor Polito celebrants.

Interment is in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Calling hours are Sunday from 3:00-6:00pm at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Mount Carmel Memorial Fund; Montgpmery County Office of the Aging; St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Envelopes available at the funeral home.
