Lillian I. Bates, 80, of Beech Street, Mayfield, NY, passed away Friday, February 28, 2014, at the Homes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, FL, with her husband Warren at her bed side.

Born on February 26, 1934 in Amsterdam, New York she was the daughter of the late George and Christina Cranshaw Ferguson.

Lillian was a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School in Amsterdam. She lived most of her life in this area, spending winters with her husband in Melbourne.

She was employed as a Machine operator for the Lawless Container Company in Scotia retiring in 1995.

In her early years Lillian liked to shoot pool, target practice, dancing, camping, bicycle riding, bowling and hiking. Most recently she enjoyed watching sunsets and going out for dinner every Sunday with her husband Warren.

On February 26, 1954 she married Warren E. Bates, Sr., they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Besides her husband she is survived by three sons, Warren E. (Lori) Bates, Jr. of Galway, Michael S. (Sally) Bates of Mayfield and Mark W. (Mary) Bates of Fort Plain; a daughter, Lynn (Walter) Buyce of Gloversville; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; several cousins.

She was predeceased by her son Stanley G. "Happy" Bates and her daughter Brenda Breznoff.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at 3:00 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY with the Rev. Cynthia Leonard officiating. Burial will take place in spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Tribes Hill.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the funeral home.
