The Amsterdam Police Department is continuing to look into the string of stolen-vehicle reports that have been popping up throughout the city over the past few months.

Det. Lt. Kurt Conroy, of the Amsterdam Police Department, said that on Feb. 20 two vehicles were reported stolen from the same driveway on Broad Street, a red 1999 Chevrolet Silverado and a gold 2001 Ford Taurus.

The Taurus was later recovered near Veteran's Field in the city, Conroy said.

That same day, there were reports to the police that four different vehicles had been gone through, though nothing taken, Conroy continued.

Four days later a 1998 Chevrolet pick-up was reported stolen from a parking lot on Edson Street, police reports show.

Conroy said that the Fulton County Sheriff's Department made an arrest in that incident after stopping the vehicle outside of Hagaman.

Leslie Davis, 43, of 251 Church St., was arrested by the sheriff's department and charged with possession of stolen property, but Conroy said it is unknown if Davis was involved in any of the other larcenies.

"We're definitely investigating and trying to follow-up on some leads," Conroy said, adding that they continue to work with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department and the New York State Police as both agencies have also experienced vehicle larcenies in their jurisdictions.

"I have not ever seen this many stolen vehicles ever in our agency in my time," Conroy said.

In a year the department would usually see four to five, he said, but since November 2012, the department has seen eight.

"It's a rare occurrence," he said.

Conroy reminds residents to be vigilant, lock cars and avoid leaving the keys or valuables inside.

Any suspicious activity should be reported to the Amsterdam Police Department at 842-1100.
