Fatal motor vehicle accident in Mayfield

Friday, February 21, 2014 - Updated: 12:03 AM

MAYFIELD -- A Northville man was killed when a vehicle traveling on State Route 30 in the Town of Mayfield hit him Thursday, Feb. 20.

New York State Police say that at about 9:20 a.m. Darcy L. Lawton, 37, Mayfield, was driving south on Route 30 when the left front tire of that vehicle came off. She pulled onto the right shoulder of the highway and contacted individuals she knows for assistance.

Pearl B. Vanevery and his brother, Charles Vanevery of Mayfield, arrived to assist Lawton in replacing the tire. Shortly after the repair, as all three were still standing on the road, a southbound vehicle operated by Robert Haner, 84, Northville, struck Lawton and Vanevery.

Charles Vaneverey, 64, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Lawton was transported by helicopter to Albany Medical Center where she underwent surgery for leg injuries.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing with the assistance of the New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, which closed Route 30 for a period of time. No tickets or charges have been filed at this time and there is no indication of alcohol and/or drug involvement thus far.
