Mr. Joseph R. DiCaprio, 79, died peacefully on Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Joe was born in Amsterdam, NY, on March 6, 1934, a son of the late Alfred and Pauline Coluni DiCaprio.
He was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam and was a 1952 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
Joe served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He was employed for more than 30 years as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Amsterdam, retiring in 1989.
Joe married Jane DiScenza DiCaprio on April 13, 1958. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed attending the many sports activities they participated in. He was an avid gardener and was known as "Joe the Garlic Guy." He also was a hunter and fisherman and enjoyed attending the Amsterdam Mohawks baseball games. Joe also loved the NY Yankees.
In addition to his devoted wife, survivors include his three loving daughters, Karen (Scott) McKelvey of Ashburn, VA; Donna (Craig) Durinick of Amsterdam, NY; and Patti (Tim) Carroll of Ballston Lake, NY; six cherished grandchildren: Brian and Kyle McKelvey, Morgan and CJ Durinick, Timmy and Emily Carroll; a brother, Alfred (Mary Doris) DiCaprio; three sisters, Nancy Gentile, Mary Donato and Jennie Hall; sisters-in-law, Elvira DiCaprio and Theresa "Terry" DiCaprio; several nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Pauline; siblings, Jean D'Alessandro, Julia Martini, Nicholas J. DiCaprio, Sr., Peter DiCaprio, Nadel Gentile and John DiCaprio.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at 11:15 A.M. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 39 St. John St., Amsterdam, NY, with Father Lawrence J. Decker as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Amsterdam, immediately following the ceremony.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY 12010. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Joe's memory to NYOH Amsterdam Cancer Center, 1700 Riverfront Center, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to a charity of one's choice.
