FORT PLAIN -- On February 12, voters will be asked to weigh in on three Fort Plain Central School District propositions, which are part of the district's overall plan to provide reliable student transportation into the future.

The first proposition asks residents to authorize the creation of a bus/transportation fund not to exceed $2.3 million. Much of the money placed into the newly established fund would come from the district's current fund balance, and no additional taxes would be required.

If established, the reserve fund would only be utilized in the purchase of school buses, vehicles and transportation-related equipment. By setting aside money in the reserve fund and moving from a five-year to a 10-year replacement schedule, the district would be able to meet its transportation needs for the next decade without requesting additional tax funding.

If the reserve fund is established by voters, the district won't have to pay interest on purchases, as they're using money they've already accrued, noted Superintendent Douglas Burton.

The second proposition asks voters to approve the transfer of $409,631 from an existing capital reserve fund into the new bus/transportation fund. This measure will require no additional taxes.

If the voters don't approve the plan to transfer the $409,631, it'll sit in the unemployment reserve. Of the plan to move the money into the new bus/transportation fund, Burton stated, "This is a way to get the money out and use it," continuing of the benefit to taxpayers, "We want to be able to give them the money back, ultimately."

The third proposition asks voters to authorize the district to spend no more than $245,000 in current fund balance to buy two full-sized buses at no additional cost to taxpayers.

Polls will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the Harry Hoag Elementary School gymnasium.
