Robert L. Johnson

Robert L. Johnson, 82, of Truax Rd., Amsterdam, passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Born in Amsterdam, NY on April 25, 1930, the son of the late S. Leland and Marjorie Eckler Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a lifelong Town of Amsterdam resident and was a 1946 honors graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School.

Robert was the owner and operator of the Mancor Dairy Farm on Truax Rd. in the Town of Amsterdam. He was a third generation family dairy farmer.

He was the committee chairman for District 5 of the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council of New York State which includes the counties of Montgomery, Fulton and Schoharie. He was a member of both the local Amsterdam-Ft.Hunter Dairy Cooperative and Eastern Milk Producers, one of the largest milk cooperatives in the Northeast.

Mr. Johnson was also a member of the Board of Directors and county secretary of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau. He was Chairman of the Bureau's Safemark Member Service Committee.

He was a former member of the Town of Amsterdam Planning Board and was a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals. He served for many years as a 4-H Leader and chairman of the county 4-H Division Committee. He was a member of the Board of Managers of Montgomery County Agricultural Society and was on the Fonda FairBoard for over 50 years and served as president for 17 years.

Mr. Johnson served as Town of Amsterdam Councilman from 1976 to 1979 and also from 1984 until 1987. He was Town Zoning Officer from 1980 to 1983. He was senior data collector from 1980 to 1982.

Mr. Johnson also worked as a school bus driver, dispatcher and coach driver for Brown Transportation in Amsterdam.

He married the former Marilyn Phillips on October 3, 1953.

In addition to his loving wife, survivors include two sons; Lawrence R. (Kathy A.) Johnson of Fultonville, NY; Donald L. (Cheryl) Johnson of Amsterdam, NY; one daughter, Susan B. (William) Bruce of Amsterdam, NY. two sisters; Lynne (Robert) Smith of West Galway, NY and Nancy (Richard) Harris of West Galway, NY; three cherished grandchildren; Emily M. Johnson, Victoria E. Johnson and Bryan C. Bruce; two aunts, Marcella Cornell of Texas and Lorraine Comstock of West Sand Lake, NY; his mother-in- law, Bertha Phillps; sisters and brother-in-law, Claude and Linda Phillips and Joyce Bovee. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a cherished grandson, Benjamin A. Johnson who passed away on November 1, 2010 and a sister, Carolyn Stanton who passed in November, 1987.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 11:00am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam with Rev. Dennis Meyer presiding.

Interment will be in Hagaman Mills Cemetery, Hagaman, NY.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February 1, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the funeral home.
