Doris C. Downes, 91, of Schenectady and Cohoes, died peacefully January 16, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam. Doris was born on September 14, 1921 in the Town of Palatine. She was the eldest child of the late Rutherford Downes and Mildred Hinkle Downes.

Doris graduated in 1940 from Canajoharie High School, SUNY Cobleskill in 1942, Albright College, PA in 1949 and ended her formal education with a masters from Case Western Reserve, OH in 1955.

Her professional career took her to many places of employment in New York primarily working as a social worker with children (her passion). She ended her career retiring in 1987 from Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital.

Doris was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, East Stone Arabia, Fort Plain, NY and the First Unitarian Society of Schenectady where she was a recipient of the Clara Barton award in 2003.

Doris is survived by her brother, Harold Downes of Canajoharie, NY, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by sisters, Esther Lamphere and Betty Klock, and brother R. Robert Downes, all of Fort Plain, NY. Doris was proud to donate her body to medical science through the Albany Medial College Anatomical Gift Program.

No services will be held at this time.

A private interment service will be held at a later date.

Donations may be made in her memory to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, NY 12078.
