Staff report

The New York Public High School Athletic Association recently released its list of Scholar/Athlete Teams for the Fall 2012 semester, and both Amsterdam and Broadalbin-Perth high schools had the distinction of having all of their varsity teams recognized for having a team grade point average of 90 or better.

Amsterdam had teams honored in nine sports -- football, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country, girls tennis, girls volleyball, golf and girls swimming and diving. The AHS golf team had a GPA of 96.857, the best of any Section II golf squad.

"That's what this is all about," said AHS athletic director Randy Hutto. "It's about academics."

The achievement was one Hutto was thrilled to see as a way to cap off his first semester as the Greater Amsterdam School District's athletic director since being appointed to the position barely two weeks before school opened.

"It's a great way to start the year," he said. "We're very, very proud of what the kids did."

Broadalbin-Perth was honored in boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer, football, golf and girls volleyball, with the girls soccer team posting the second-highest GPA in its category.

Fonda-Fultonvile had its boys and girls cross country and boys and girls soccer teams recognized, along with the Fonda-Johnstown girls swimming and diving team. Also honored were the Fort Plain golf, girls volleyball and girls soccer teams, the joint Canajoharie-Fort Plain boys cross country team, the Mayfield girls soccer, girls volleyball and boys cross country teams and the Northville, St. Johnsville and Galway girls soccer teams.
