Irene K. Sinda, R.N. of Hillcrest Spring formerly of Perth passed away peacefully with her family at her side on December 29, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital.Born on May 23, 1919 in Staunton, Illinois, she was the daughter of Joseph Knapp and Katherine Pikor.  She resided in Hagaman, NY in her early years. She graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School and also from Amsterdam City Hospital training school as a Registered Nurse.  During WWII, she served in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps as a 1st Lieutenant in England, North Africa, and Italy.  Irene was employed as a Registered Nurse working as a private duty and general duty nurse at Amsterdam City Hospital and later at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and became an obstetrical supervisor, retiring in 1982.She was a parishioner of St. Stephen’s Church in Hagaman, NY and was a member of Amsterdam City Hospital Alumnae Association.Irene was married to Raymond J. Sinda who predeceased her in 2003 and was also predeceased by her brother, Joseph Knapp and sisters, Patricia Panton and Amelia Higgins.She is survived by a son, Richard J. Sinda of Scarborough, Maine and a daughter, Gretchen (George) Fodor of Ashburn, VA, grandsons; Andrew Franzheim (Suzie) of Illinois and Albert W. Franzheim, III  of Washington State and nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 10:30 am at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, with the Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis         officiating. Burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery in Amsterdam with military honors.  The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday morning from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Charity of One’s Choice or to St. Stephen’s Church, 46 Pawling Street, Hagaman, NY 12086. Please sign the family guestbook online at
