Helen Zyromski Aiken, 85, of Perth, N.Y., and New Bern, N.C., passed away on Feb. 10, 2017, after a brief illness. She joins her husband, Thomas, and son, Matthew, in eternal life.
A 1948 graduate of Broadalbin High School, Helen later graduated from SUNY at Morrisville and earned a BS in Dietetics from Russell Sage College in 1962.
Early in her career, she worked in the field of dietetics in Miami, Fla., and also in the Broadalbin Central School District, creating their first school lunch program. Later, she followed her gardening passion and opened Country, Garden, and Gift, a florist and greenhouse, formerly located in Vail Mills. Helen owned the business until her retirement, at age 57. For the next 25 years, Helen and Thomas spent their retirement in Perth and New Bern, N.C. They enjoyed golf, amazing friendships, and their continued love of gardening.
Helen was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Broadalbin and was a beloved and devoted parishioner.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Louis Harrison; two grandsons, Robert and Thomas Harrison, all of Glencoe, Ill.; her daughter-in-law, Susan Aiken, of Mechanicville; and several nieces and nephews.
This extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, cook, gardener, artist, and friend will be deeply missed.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on May 20, 2017, at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 7 North St., Broadalbin with the Rev. Jun Segura, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Local arrangements are by the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. Johnstown.
