Cleanup continues 6 weeks after western New York windstorm

ROCHESTER (AP) — Western New York landscape workers are still fixing the damage six weeks after a powerful windstorm — and the labor may continue until mid-summer.

WHEC television in Rochester says the work includes both debris removal and replacing what the storm took away.

Winds gusting to 80 mph also knocked out power across a wide swath of western New York on March 8 and 9. More than half of the 200,000 outages were in the Rochester area.

New York man gets prison time for fatal DWI crash

NASSAU (AP) — A Rensselaer County man has been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison for a fatal drunken driving crash and ordered to pay for his friend’s headstone.

Edward Ferguson, of Nassau, was convicted in February of 12 counts in the July 2015 crash that killed his friend, 28-year-old Christopher Sharpley, of West Sand Lake.

Investigators say Ferguson made a left turn in front of a car driven by 47-year-old Terry Metcalf, of Scotia, who was injured.

Ferguson was convicted of vehicular homicide, assault, drunken driving and other charges.

He was sentenced Monday to 8 to 25 years in prison and ordered to pay for a headstone for Sharpley, who was celebrating his birthday the night he died.

New York state warns of increased wildfire risk

ALBANY (AP) — New York state officials are warning residents of the dangers of wildfires.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration announced Monday that higher-than-normal temperatures and seasonal winds could heighten the risk of wildfires this spring.

The state has banned open burning through May 14.

Brush fires often are a problem in the spring as rising temperatures and dry grass can create potentially dangerous situations.

The governor’s office says crews have recently responded to reports of fires in Albany, Allegany, Cattaraugus, Essex, Herkimer, Orange and Saratoga counties.

Cuomo’s office says residents can prepare for possible brush fires by inspecting their home’s exterior, removing dead leaves or vegetation and keeping a working hose connected to an outdoor faucet.
