APD: ‘Fatal medical event’ spurred crash

STAFF REPORT

Amsterdam police announced Monday that a Clifton Park woman had a “fatal medical event” which was a factor in a motor vehicle accident Friday morning on Market Street.

Police declined to be elaborate on the exact cause of death, but said the medical issue led to Joanna C. Maciariello, 64, crashing her pick-up truck into the rear of a tractor trailer. Maciariello was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tractor trailer, driven by Christopher Baker, 47, of Massachusetts, was stopped at a red light on Market Street at the intersection of Division Street, according to police. Maciariello reportedly rear ended the tractor trailer at a high rate of speed at approximately 10:39 a.m. Friday.

Police said Baker did not report any injuries and there were no passengers in either vehicle.

First responders found Maciariello pinned inside her truck and Amsterdam firefighters extricated her from the vehicle, according to police.

Police had said there did not appear to be any skid marks in the roadway leading up to the crash site.
