HFM BOCES will host two registration events for adults interested in learning English as a Second Language in early October. The daytime event will be held Monday, Oct. 16, at 12:30 p.m. Students must arrive at 12:30 p.m. The evening event will be held Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 5:30 p.m. Students must arrive at 5:30 p.m. The events will occur at the Amsterdam Literacy Zone, which is housed in the United Presbyterian Church at 25 Church St. The entrance is off the upper parking lot.
Students must arrive on time, with a picture ID and be prepared to stay for approximately 2.5 hours. During orientation, students will learn about the program, register for class and participate in an assessment of their listening and speaking skills.
Class assignments will be made after the assessment is completed. Beginner day classes meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Intermediate/Advanced day classes meet Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. All levels of evening classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Instruction will focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Civics education, including U.S. history, government, citizenship, geography, holidays, and culture will be integrated into the program.
Students are expected to attend class every day as scheduled. Classes are offered without cost to the student. This is possible through funding for adult learners through the New York State Education Department. Classes are available to adult learners age 18 and older.
