Sheldon Howard, a St. Johnsville resident, recently competed at the Mohawk Valley Open Martial Arts Tournament on Sept. 16 in Utica.

Howard, a sixth degree karate black belt and first degree tae kwon do black belt, competed in multiple events and divisions in the 18 and over Black Belt category.

Howard took home three gold, one silver and one bronze for the day. He won the weapons, Korean and open forms divisions and placed second in kumite (sparring) and third in Japanese/Okinawan forms.

Howard, close to 60, is an experienced successful competitor on the international and domestic tournament circuits. He has won National Championships (AKA, AAU and USTA) and also represented the USA on several United States Karate teams. Earlier in the year, he won his division in the American Karate Association Grand Nationals in Chicago.
