Much needs to be fixed at Muni

Everyone seems to be missing the point as to what's wrong at Amsterdam Muni. When a golfer goes to a golf course, they don't ask who the pro is. Nor do they inquire as to who runs the concession. First and foremost, they want to see a well maintained golf course. They want to see manicured greens, even, grassy tee boxes, lush fairways, maintained sand traps, a ball washer at every hole, no litter or trash laying around. Sadly, none of these things exist at Amsterdam Muni, and that is the problem. That is one of the main reasons why Amsterdam Muni is supposedly underperforming. I say "supposedly" because I don't think anyone really knows if the course makes money or not.

When it is hot and dry out, the ground is as hard as a rock. There is plenty of water at the course, with an adequate sprinkler system. So, what's the problem, you might ask. Well, I'll tell you. The problem is that the head groundskeeper won't water the course like he should. I don't know why he won't.

A lot of drainage has been put in over the last two years or so. That's a good thing. It was needed. So, what's the problem? Well, I'll tell you. The problem is that after installing the drainage, the groundskeeper throws some dirt over it, and just leaves it like that. He doesn't plant any new grass, leaving an unsightly mess. When he did plant some grass, he didn't water it, didn't rope it off, and let everybody walk and ride over it. How can new grass grow under those conditions?

These are the types of things that need to be fixed at Amsterdam Muni. These are the things that golfers want to see. These are the things that will bring golfers to Amsterdam Muni. Instead of concentrating on replacing the pro, the Common Council, golf commission and mayor should be looking for someone who will maintain the golf course the way it's supposed to be. I have publicly said all of this, twice, at Common Council meetings. I'm starting to get the impression that nobody is listening to me.

Raising funds in the community

To the editor:

Over the past several months Mountain Valley Hospice has conducted a fundraising drive in our community. You may have noticed 5 gallon water bottles at several locations throughout our service area filled with loose change designated to support our mission to patients, families and our community. Very soon we will be collecting these bottles, but before we do we would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to the many businesses that supported this endeavor.

As we prepare to collect our bottles we want to ask for your help in filling them with change. So if you are out and about at any of these establishments please look for our blue water bottles and empty your pockets of change to help support Mountain Valley Hospice. As Margaret Mead once said, "Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For indeed, that's all who ever have."
