Scrap metal drive to benefit YMCA
HAGAMAN -- Now is the perfect time to clean out attics, basements and garages, since the Amsterdam Family YMCA is planning a recycling drive for the entire month of May and is collecting all scrap metals.
Representatives from the Y will haul away metal from homes or businesses at no cost, which means tons of trash won't go into landfills. At the same time, the money paid by the recycling company for the metal will help subsidize programs at the Amsterdam Family YMCA, a non-profit cause-driven charity.
Items must be at least 50 percent metal. The Y is looking for aluminum siding, barbecue grills, electronic motors, fans, fire extinguishers, lawn mowers (no fluids), microwave ovens, toasters, tools, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, auto parts, bicycles, steel pipe, car tire rims, ladders, and leaf blowers, among other items.
Not accepted are televisions, computers, computer monitors, paint cans, propane tanks or any other hazardous materials. While the pickup service is free, the recycling company charges the YMCA $20 for refrigerators and freezers and $10 for air conditioners, which is a cost passed on to the donor.
The free pickup service is being offered to anyone located within a 10 mile radius of the Y's Hagaman facility. The areas serviced are Amsterdam, Hagaman, Perth, Broadalbin, Galway, Tribes Hill, Fort Johnson, Fort Hunter, Cranesville and Minaville.
The drive will run throughout May. To schedule a pick-up, call the Y at 842-2130 or stop by the facility at 58 N. Pawling St., Hagaman.
