Amsterdam indoor track strong in debut meet

SCHENECTADY -- Sophomore Izaiah Brown got Amsterdam High School's brand-new indoor track program off to a sizzling start Sunday in the team's first-ever meet, winning three events as the AHS boys took second in an eight-team field at Union College.

Brown won the 300-meter dash by more than two seconds and the 600-meter dash by more than five seconds while also clearing six feet to win the high jump. Anthony Stewart was also victorious for Amsterdam, winning the 1,000-meter run. Nick Raponi (1,600 meters) and Chris Rost (45 meters) added runner-up finishes for Amsterdam, which finished seven points behind first-place Scotia-Glenville. Amsterdam also got a second-place finish from the 4x800-meter relay team of Stewart, Nick Raponi, Matt Raponi and Josh Turo.

The Amsterdam girls finished fifth in a nine-team field, getting individual wins from Kelly Paris in the 300-meter dash and Illenis Quinones in the 1,500-meter run. Madison Janetsky added a second-place finish for Amsterdam in the long jump.
