BROADALBIN -- The Sons of the American Legion Post 337 raised $9,236 for Fort Plain flood victims and the Fort Plain Fire Department Saturday during the third annual Best Pig Cook-Off.
More than 400 people attended the event, which took place in the legion's pavilion just off Route 29.
A little rain never dampened the spirits of those who coordinated and participated.
Four teams participated in the cook-off, resulting in a combined weight of nearly 700 pounds of roasted swine.
The cookers were stoked, smoke billowed from the pipe chimneys, the pigs were secretly seasoned, basted and slow roasted to perfection beginning in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The event went on from noon to 10 p.m. with music by The Karg Bros. by day and Third Rael by night.
Trophies were awarded to the competitors, and the final rankings were as follows:
* First place: The Finch Family of Edinburg
* Second place: Charlie Sweet and Brian Burroughs of Perth
* Third place: Jay Weaver, Clint Buckner and Wayne Dingman of Perth
* Fourth place: Lee Zierak and Dave Earley of Broadalbin
There was a 50/50 raffle and an auction of more than 100 donated items to raise more funds for Fort Plain.
Kyle Bundy won the 50/50 raffle of $1,275 and donated $500 of it back.
"If I didn't have to buy fuel oil I would have donated all of it back. It was for a great cause," said Bundy.
