For the Recorder
Liberty has been a shining light on the Montgomery County community horizon for over 55 years. From its humble beginning as a parent-led organization striving to provide quality services to family members with developmental disabilities, Liberty has evolved into a multi-faceted agency supporting more than 6,000 individuals from age five to adulthood. An overview follows for those unfamiliar with scope of services Liberty offers:
Liberty, the Montgomery County Chapter of NYSARC, provides daily supports to individuals with developmental, intellectual and physical disabilities. Individuals might spend their time volunteering or working with organizations or businesses in the community as part of one Liberty's day habilitation programs. Others may spend time honing life skills or working on improving their strength, agility or communication abilities with the guidance of one of Liberty's clinical specialists. All services are designed to assist individuals in attaining a higher level of independence, always with a focus on the areas of interest that matter most to each person.
Liberty Enterprises is the manufacturing arm of Liberty, producing a varied line of goods for sale to the state of New York and other customers. Located at 43 Liberty Drive, Amsterdam, the program provides job skills training and employment for individuals with disabilities. For those who wish to pursue employment in the community, the work environment provides opportunities to develop the attributes required to maintain a competitive job.
The Career and Employment Network is the supported employment arm of the Liberty Enterprises vocational program. From offices located at the Riverfront Center in Amsterdam, the program offers individualized career planning, training, job placement and on-the-job coaching. Adults with developmental and other disabilities are matched to in-community career opportunities with one of over 120 business partners based upon each individual's personal preference and skill level.
Established in 1993, the Liberty Foundation serves a vital role in providing resources for family support and other community-based programs that do not receive public funding. The foundation conducts a variety of fundraisers meant to support the agency's mission, including the foundation's long running annual golf tournament and cash raffle, as well as an annual fund drive, numerous planned giving opportunities and major campaign initiatives.
New Dimensions in Health Care is centrally located on Wall Street, Amsterdam. This full-service diagnostic treatment center offers high-quality medical and dental services for people of all ages. Founded in 1996, the program serves more than 5,500 area residents, fulfilling an important role in the health care continuum in our community.
Out of State Operations -- Liberty operates day and residential programs for people with developmental disabilities in Delaware and an in-home care service for seniors in Florida. The intent of these programs is to offer quality support to people in need while helping the organization maintain financial stability of our core programs in Montgomery County.
Excellence, quality and compassion exist inside Liberty walls, as well as through the ongoing commitment we have made to those around us. Our new slogan, "Caring About Each Other. Committed to the Community" captures a sense of the importance Liberty places on the valued internal and external relationships we have developed and continue to cultivate. In future articles we will be telling the stories of people supported in our programs, staff, and others associated with Liberty. Their accomplishments and dedication demonstrate how everything Liberty is and does is tied to our mission and to betterment of our community.
