Amsterdam authorities responded to a single car rollover at the intersection of Broadway Extension and Florida Avenue in the city Sunday afternoon.
Police Officer Ariel Santiago said 18-year-old Alexander Vertucci of Ann Street declined medical attention after flipping his two-door BMW sedan.
The teen was ticketed for imprudent speed and bald tires, Santiago said, which contributed to the incident.
Vertucci was traveling northwest up the Broadway Extension hill from Florida Avenue, Santiago said. He told the police officer he veered to avoid hitting a cat, got caught up in the ditch, and flipped his car.
"There were a lot of contributing factors," Santiago said, adding the elements of speeding and wet pavement from earlier rainfall. He appeared doubtful a cat was involved. but either way, there wasn't an injured kitty on the scene.
The BMW came to rest on its hood in the westbound lane of Broadway Extension. Santiago said Vertucci exited the vehicle through a rear passenger window, both of which were smashed.
"It could have been a lot worse," Santiago said.
There were no other vehicles involved.
In addition to the Amsterdam Police Department, GAVAC, city firefighters and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office also responded.
