Mr. Rudolph (Rudy) Ott, of Amsterdam, New York died peacefully at home with his loving family at his bedside, on Thursday, May 9, 2013 following a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.
Born on May 31, 1926 in Amsterdam, New York he was the first son of the late Herbert and Anita Schmidtmann Ott.
A lifelong area resident, Rudy was a 1944 graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School. He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in the South-Pacific Theater with the 40th Fighter Sq. 35th Fighter Group in Okinawa. He ended his service spending time as a member of the Occupation Army in Japan as Sgt. Airplane Line Chief, supervising the inspection and maintenance of aircraft and aircraft equipment. He was honorably discharged in November 1945 and continued his education at SUNY and George Washington University.
He married the former Elsin Grey Struensee on March 8, 1947, who survives.
Rudy spent the majority of his career in construction management and mechanical engineering with the George A. Fuller Company and MLB. He was recognized several times for his leadership and contributions to some of the most ambitious and farsighted construction projects in the state including: the SUNY Albany campus, the Empire State Plaza, Union Station, and the Times Union Center.
Rudy was active in the community serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, Church Council member and Scout Leader for over 20 years. He served as President and Vice President of the former Perth Central School Board of Education for 10 years and was a 65 year member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge 84 in Amsterdam. He will always be remembered for his extraordinary generosity, his leadership ability, and his service to others. "The happiest times of his life were when he was helping and supporting others."
In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter, Claudia (Joseph) Somers of Amsterdam, his son Tim (Linda) of Amsterdam, and his son Thomas (Mary) of Fultonville. Five grandchildren, Marisa Somers, Joe Somers, Mike Ott, Megan (Quentin) Hallenbeck, and Rebecca (Tim) Cornell survive along with his great granddaughter Maci Hallenbeck. His sisters -in-law Mary Lou and Velma Ott survive along with several nieces and nephews. Rudy was predeceased by his brothers Herbert and Ronald.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 13, 2013, at 11:00 am at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 42 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY, with the Rev William T. Hodgetts, Jr. officiating. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date at the Gerald. B. Soloman Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. A Masonic Service will be held on that day at 4:30 pm at the funeral home.
