Mrs. Vincenza "Ginger" Mercadante, 90, of Laurel Drive, Amsterdam, New York passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at the Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility with her family at her side.
Born January 1, 1923 in Fonda, New York she was a daughter of the late Michele and Louisa Natale Pacino.
She was educated in Amsterdam schools and was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School ~ Class of 1940. She lived in Amsterdam, New York most of her life, having also resided in Connecticut, California and Florida.
She was employed for several years as an Administrative Assistant with the VA Hospital in West Haven, Connecticut.
Mrs. Mercadante was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church and the Christian Women's Group.
She was an avid Yankee and Giants fan, She followed college sports and counted Notre Dame, Siena, U Conn, Michigan State and Oregon as her favorites. She always celebrated her Italian heritage and was recognized as a great cook. She also enjoyed corresponding with her relatives in Sicily. She had a great sense of style and fashion. Most of all, she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who always put her family first.
She is survived by her husband Carmen E. Mercadante whom she married September 22, 1946; a loving union of 66 years; her three children, Judith Heller (Richard), Niskayuna, New York, Janice Duchessi (John) and Joel Mercadante (Christine) both of Amsterdam, New York; six grandchildren, Christopher Heller, Niskayuna, New York, Sarah Forsyth, Eugene, Oregon, Jamie Duchessi and Torrey Duchessi, both of Amsterdam, Adam Mercadante and Faith Mercadante both of Johnstown, New York; five great grandchildren, Bradley and Davis Heller, Matthew, Andrew and Kate Forsyth; one brother, Joseph Pacino (Marie), Amsterdam; two nieces, Patti Petrosino and Michele Pacino; and several cousins.
She was predeceased by her nephew, Michael Pacino.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2012 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, St. John Street, Amsterdam, New York.
Interment will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
